The works involved carrying out Periodic Testing of fixed wiring electrical circuits served by a number of distribution boards within the hospital, together with the supply of test instruments, temporary extension leads and the production and issue of Test Certificates, all to IET, BS7671:2018 and IET Guidance Note No 3 Inspection and Testing standard.
The work also included in-situ remedial works, marking up of record drawings, providing new circuit charts and identification labels for each distribution board and the circuit reference labelling of all switch plates, socket outlets, connection units and accessories.
The first challenge arose when a substantial number of electrical defects were uncovered within the hospital's distribution board circuits. Although the building was relatively new, the original electrical contractor had gone into administration before completing the necessary certifications and finalizing the installations. This created a potential delay of two weeks and posed a hazardous situation as neutrals were found to be shared between essential and non-essential supplies.
To mitigate these risks, Highland Services promptly engaged with the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board to discuss and agree upon changes to the project schedule. We also implemented new safe isolation and testing procedures to ensure the safety of hospital staff, patients, and on-site personnel. As a result, the project could proceed without compromising the original timeline or causing disruptions.
The second challenge emerged from the absence of complete installation certifications due to the previous contractor's situation. This lack of documentation presented difficulties in accurately assessing the status of the works and identifying any outstanding requirements.
To overcome this challenge, Highland Services diligently conducted in-situ remedial works, marked up record drawings, and produced new circuit charts and identification labels for each distribution board. Additionally, we implemented a comprehensive circuit reference labeling system for switch plates, socket outlets, connection units, and accessories throughout the hospital. These meticulous efforts ensured that the installation was well-documented, compliant with regulations, and easily traceable for future reference or maintenance purposes.
